Obamas: Confusing Christmas with a "Seasonal" Event

Cross-posted by Maggie at Maggie’s Notebook

H/T to The Obama Nation

The Obamas, in an unnamed magazine interview, agree that Santa Claus and “seasonal gifts,” are appropriate, BUT Christmas gifts are not.

The Telegraph UK

In a magazine interview Obama and his wife Michelle revealed that one of their steadfast house rules is not giving Christmas or birthday presents to Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven.

The couple explained that they spend “hundreds” on birthday slumber parties and want to “teach some limits”. Santa Claus is still permitted to deliver seasonal gifts however.

I was impressed until I got to that last sentence. I concede that Christmas gifts get out-of-hand, and the meaning of Christmas can be lost in the material wealth on December 25th.

But if Santa is allowed to come and leave “seasonal gifts” on the traditional day of Christ’s birth, in a Christian home – them I confused.

Other cultures and religions have celebratory events at about the same time as our Christmas. Some celebrate with traditional Christmas icons such as Christmas trees, Christmas stockings, gifts, – even though they are not Christian. But the Obamas do not adhere to other cultures or other religions, do they?

This glimpse into the Obama’s home life, on the most sacred day of the year, other than Resurrection Day, for a Christian, is one more reason to doubt his commitment to Judeo-Christian values. And yes, I know that I do not know what is in a person’s heart. Nevertheless…

Christmas is not a “seasonal” event.

Let Us "Stir The Pot"

The following is rewritten and taken from the Levitt Letter which I subscribe to. I thought it was pertinent to what many of us perhaps know already but were afraid to admit publicly. This may be somewhat controversial, even contentious, but please read it carefully.

How many times will you, as a Christian, “turn the other cheek”, or avoid unpleasantness(is that a word?)?

Will you pick the tough road filled with obstacles and enemies, or will you choose the path of least resistance and no enemies?

DeSeifering Our World
By Dr. Jefferey Seif. Zola Levitt Ministries.

Should Christians make praying for their enemies an absolute priority? I say absolutely “Not”! By contrast I suggest that Christians making enemies should be a priority and then, once made, we should be praying for them. Sound strange? Listen up.

While Christians are fond of quoting Jesus praying “forgive them; they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34), we do well to note that, though they didn’t know what they were doing, Jesus certainly did. At one level, they were responding to Jesus’ having previously and provocatively taken a whip to individuals in the Jewish Temple (see John 2:13-22). Jewish authorities were, in like manner, responding to having been the object of Jesus’ prophetic scorn in Matthew 23:1-35, in the process of which they were referred to as “ hypocrites” (v.14; cf.vv. 23, 27) “blind guides” (v. 16; cf. vv. 24, 26), “fools” and “blind” (v. 17; cf.v. 24); and, as if all this wasn’t bad enough, Jesus likewise went on record calling them “serpents” and then “broods of vipers” in v. 33.
Though Jesus prayed for His enemies, He also made His enemies on the heels of His provocations.

Paul, for his part, did much the same.

A riot ensued in the wake of Paul’s early ministry in Damascus, and he was spirited away in a basket to avoid getting killed (Acts 9:23-25). He narrowly escaped Thessalonica, when riots followed there (Acts 17:1-10). Luke informs that Paul generated so much discontent in Jerusalem that the authorities “called for two centurions…saying ‘Prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen… and provide mounts to set Paul on, and bring him to Felix the governor’” (Acts 23:23-24).

Add Paul’s own autobiography to this mess, and we learn that he was slashed with whips many times, and on more than one occasion, beaten with rods, stoned with boulders, and imprisoned frequently (II Corinthians 11:23-33). This guy was a virtual riot-maker! Though Paul graciously prayed for his enemies, let’s remember that he made them too. Had he done nothing with his life—as seems the case with many Christians today—the world would have ignored him, much as it ignores much of the boring and irrelevant in the church today.

It’s for this and other reasons that I say praying for our enemies should not be our priority, as much as making them should be, by taking stands.

Jesus, Paul, and the early brethren did not invoke the ire of the authorities by being really, really nice guys—the image of today’s Christians. No. They “stirred it up” by boldly contending for principles; and they, as we know, got into trouble by virtue of their so doing.

Seems to me that the issue of “praying for our enemies” is a moot and irrelevant point for many Christians today.

Many simply don’t have any enemies to pray for because, contrary to the teachings and examples of Jesus and Paul, they are not doing anything to “ruffle any feathers” in the world.
I say, “Let’s take stands, make enemies and then—of course—pray for them.”

The Devil is in the Details

On Page 15 of the Ulama’s letter to Christianity, we find this:

Finally, as Muslims, and in obedience to the Holy Qur’an, we ask Christians to come together with us on the common essentials of our two religions … that we shall worship none but God, and that we shall ascribe no partner unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside God … (Aal ‘Imran, 3:64).
Let this common ground be the basis of all future interfaith dialogue between us, for our common ground is that on which hangs all the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 22:40). God says in the Holy Qur’an:
Say (O Muslims): We believe in God and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered. / And if they believe in the like of that which ye believe, then are they rightly guided. But if they turn away, then are they in schism, and God will suffice thee against them. He is the Hearer, the Knower. (Al-Baqarah, 2:136-137)

They preach to us about Common essentials;  and immediately demand that we profane Jesus Christ. Islam denies his deity, crucifixion, death and resurrection.  It is Christians who must abandon their faith; Islam does not compromise!

The next to last sentence of the quote from al-Baqarah conceals more than it reveals. “But  if they turn away , then are they in schism, and God will suffice thee against them. He is the Hearer, the Knower.”

  1. if they turn away” is a common expression in the Qur’an. How is it used? As a pretext for war.

Turn now to Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir.  Good News for the Believers of Eternal Delight

    (73. O Prophet! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh against them, their abode is Hell, — and worst indeed is that destination.) (74. They swear by Allah that they said nothing (bad), but really they said the word of disbelief, and they disbelieved after accepting Islam, and they resolved that (plot) which they were unable to carry out, and they could not find any cause to do so except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them of His bounty. If then they repent, it will be better for them, but if they turn away; Allah will punish them with a painful torment in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. And there is none for them on earth as a protector or a helper.)

Threatening the Disbelievers with Torment in This Life and the Hereafter

(And I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve till the Day of Resurrection. Then you will return to Me and I will judge between you in the matters in which you used to dispute. As to those who disbelieve, I will punish them with a severe torment in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.)

This is what Allah did to the Jews who disbelieved in `Isa and the Christians who went to the extreme over him. Allah tormented them in this life; they were killed, captured, and lost their wealth and kingdoms. Their torment in the Hereafter is even worse and more severe, …  ) (62. Verily, this is the true narrative, and there is no god except Allah. And indeed, Allah is the Almighty, the All-Wise.) (63. And if they turn away, then surely, Allah is All-Aware of those who do mischief.)

  2. God will suffice thee against them

Turn now to Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir.
Encouraging Believers to fight in Jihad; the Good News that a Few Muslims can overcome a Superior Enemy Force

Allah encourages His Prophet and the believers to fight and struggle against the enemy, and wage war against their forces. Allah affirms that He will suffice, aid, support, and help the believers against their enemies, even if their enemies are numerous and have sufficient supplies, while the believers are few. Allah said,

﴿يَـأَيُّهَا النَّبِىُّ حَرِّضِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى الْقِتَالِ﴾

(O Prophet! Urge the believers to fight), encouraged and called them to fight. The Messenger of Allah used to encourage the Companions to fight when they faced the enemy. On the day of Badr when the idolators came with their forces and supplies, he said to his Companions,

«قُومُوا إِلَى جَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا السَّمَوَاتُ وَالْأَرْض»

(Get ready and march forth towards a Paradise as wide as the heavens and earth.)

`Umayr bin Al-Humam said, “As wide as the heavens and earth” The Messenger said,

«نَعَم»

(Yes) `Umayr said, “Excellent! Excellent!” The Messenger asked him,

«مَا يَحْمِلُكَ عَلَى قَوْلِكَ: بَخٍ بَخ»

(What makes you say, `Excellent! Excellent!’) He said, “The hope that I might be one of its dwellers.” The Prophet said,

«فَإِنَّكَ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا»

(You are one of its people.) Umayr went ahead, broke the scabbard of his sword, took some dates and started eating from them. He then threw the dates from his hand, saying, “Verily, if I lived until I finished eating these dates, then it is indeed a long life.” He went ahead, fought and was killed, may Allah be pleased with him.

Allah said next, commanding the believers and conveying good news to them,

(If there are twenty steadfast persons among you, they will overcome two hundred, and if there be a hundred steadfast persons, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve.)

Allah provides, suffices, and makes a Way out of Every Hardship for Those Who have Taqwa

Far from being an offer of peace, the letter is a demand for surrender.  While it is more subtle than Muhammad’s extortion letters, it is no less threatening.

islam Appeasement at a Congressional Level

This came to my email from ACT! for America (ACT for America is an issues advocacy organization dedicated to effectively organizing and mobilizing the most powerful grassroots citizen action network in America, a grassroots network committed to informed and coordinated civic action that will lead to public policies that promote America’s national security and the defense of American democratic values against the assault of radical Islam.)
and shows just how far our congress will stoop to appease those who wish to kill and subjugate us.

376 of our representatives voted for this; 42 (41 Republicans; 1 Democrat) voted “present”; 14 did not vote and NONE voted No. The 42 voting present were “troubled”, but apparently not troubled enough to vote No. Why?

Not surprisingly, one of the sponsors of this resolution was Keith Ellison, our first muslim congressman. His ranting can be found in this article: “US House Passes Historic Ramadan Resolution” at USINFO.STATE.GOV here.

In reviewing the roll call of H. Res 635 Recognizing the Commencement of Ramadan, the islamic Holy Month of Fasting…., I noticed all but one of my state’s congressional representatives voted “aye”…including Gabrielle Giffords and Raul Grijalva. The lone holdout, voting present, was Republican Trent Franks. GovTrack.us has the entire breakdown by state of this vote here.

Here is the article I received in my email, in its entirety:

Political Correctness On Display In Washington
As U.S. House Passes First-Ever Resolution
Honoring Islam and Ramadan

An Important Message from Brigitte Gabriel

Dear [Redacted],

For the first time ever, the U.S. House of Representatives, on a 376 – 0 vote, passed a resolution honoring the Islamic holiday Ramadan and commending Muslims for their faith.

Congressman Tom Tancredo, one of 42 voting “present,” in a press release after the vote cited the resolution as “an example of the degree to which political correctness has captured the political and media elite” in America. He further stated: “I am not opposed to commending any religion for their faith. The problem is that any attempt to do so for Jews or Christians is immediately condemned as ’breaching’ the non-existent line between Church and State by the same elite.”

Congressman Scott Garrett commented that in his five years in Congress he could not remember a resolution honoring Christmas or Easter. As of this morning, a search by the ACT for America staff had not uncovered any resolution in the past 20 years honoring a Jewish holiday.

Other Members of Congress expressed being “troubled” by the resolution. Yet it passed without a single “no” vote. Why? And why the special treatment of an Islamic holiday?

Because politically correct treatment of Islam is growing, and the pressures in Washington to knuckle under to this political correctness have become extremely intense. I heard this loud and clear from Members of Congress when I spoke on Capitol Hill on September 10th. We know there are Members up there who are deeply concerned, and deeply troubled, by the growing and glowing affirmation of Islam, given Islam’s past and current history of violence, brutality, terrorism and intolerance. These congressmen and women need to know that there are millions of Americans who share their concerns. These congressmen and women need to know that there are millions of Americans who understand that Islam, especially militant Islam, has not been a religion of peace, and is, in fact, the major threat to peace and liberty in the world today.

This is why building ACT for America’s citizen action network is so immensely important. That’s why we need the help of every concerned citizen. As we build our chapter network, as we add tens of thousands, then hundreds of thousands, then millions of concerned Americans to this grassroots network, elected officials everywhere will know that there is another voice in this great country, a voice of the people who will not be intimidated by, nor bow to, political correctness. Our allies in the Congress and the state legislatures will know it. So will those who put their finger in the wind to determine which way they vote!

With over 220 people volunteering to lead chapters in nearly 40 states and four foreign countries, we’ve gotten off to a great start.

ACTION ITEM #1: I’m asking everyone reading this to get involved in the ACT for America chapter network by clicking here.

ACTION ITEM #2: Then, forward this email to every person you know and urge them to join us.

ACTION ITEM #3: And finally, Contact your Member of Congress about this resolution and let him/her know how you feel about their vote. While you’re at it, please ask them:

Will you offer a congressional resolution calling on American Muslim Imams to issue fatwas against Hamas, Al-Qaida, Hezbollah and the rest of the barbaric organizations killing innocent people in the name of Islam?

Will you offer a congressional resolution calling for the closing of the mosques and Islamic organizations in America that teach children that Christians and Jews are apes and pigs…that teach children to hate for Allah’s sake…that teach children it is the religious duty of every Muslim to overthrow America’s constitutional government and replace it with Islamic government under sharia law…that teach children that in order to fulfill the sacred obligation of Jihad they must invade the Western heartland and struggle to overcome it until all the world shouts by the name of the prophet Mohammad?

Will you offer a congressional resolution calling for the closure of Islamic paramilitary camps that exist on American soil, compounds where militants are being trained in the tactics of armed Jihad?

Together, we must rise in defense of America,

Brigitte Gabriel

islam Appeasement at a Congressional Level

Miller Breweries/Folsom Street Fair Update

From Catholic League:

October 1, 2007

MILLER ANNOUNCES IMMEDIATE AUDIT:

MARKETING POLICIES UNDER REVIEW

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented today on the latest developments regarding the league’s boycott of Miller Brewing:

“Today’s San Francisco Chronicle reports that at yesterday’s Folsom Street Fair, ‘couples led each other up and down the street with dog collars and leashes, men in thong underwear played Twister….’ There was also a man who was flogged to such an extent that ‘red lash marks covered his back.’ Other gay men decided to ‘walk around naked’ in front of women and children. In addition to the homosexuals who dressed as nuns—ridiculing the women who have given selflessly of their lives in service to the dispossessed—there was a female stripper who was hoisted in a cage over a Roman Catholic church (on a Sunday when Masses were being said). The lead sponsor for the incredible spectacle is the Miller Brewing Company.

“The response from Miller has been encouraging, though incomplete. The Milwaukee brewer issued a news release on September 26 saying it took exception to the use of its logo on an offensive poster mocking the Last Supper. Today, it extended its original statement by apologizing for the misuse of its logo, ‘particularly [to] members of the Christian community who have contacted us to express their concern.’ It also said, ‘We are conducting an immediate audit of our procedures for approving local marketing and sales sponsorships to ensure that this does not happen again.’

“We called Miller today asking for clarification of this statement, and we are pleased to note that a full-scale review of all its promotional policies is underway. It is not certain at this time whether Miller plans to sponsor events like the Folsom Street Fair in the future.

Accordingly, while we are not calling off the boycott, we are tabling a serious course of action that we were going to announce today. We expect that Miller will resolve this issue before too long.”

********************
As shown in a previous post here, Miller has no problem acceding to the wishes of muslims, African-American clergy, lawyers and feminists. Apparently, it has a problem acceding to the wishes of Christians. The ad was not pulled prior to the event. Regardless of what Miller does now, the damage has been done–they have sponsored the deviancy of Folsom, even after being requested by many, many Christian groups. It shows where Miller’s priorities lie.

The question is–where do YOUR priorities lie?
